February 2018: Your Medical Scanners Might Be Vulnerable

Hi folks,

Nowadays, it is not uncommon to hear about MRI or CT scans when you go to a hospital, is it? That is how integrated technology is with the medical industry. However, many of these devices do not get ongoing security updates, making them vulnerable to the latest exploits.

As with anything that could be connected to networks, medical imaging devices (MID) are also vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Among the exploitations that the attackers can do are remotely control CT devices to emit high radiation rates, or block and disable access to the devices.

Researchers at BGU are currently working on solutions to secure CT devices through machine learning. An algorithm is developed to first look at the profile of the patient who is undergoing scanning and identify the appropriate outgoing commands before reaching the CT itself.

For the future, their team is planning to uncover more vulnerabilities and generate more solutions via two dozens more simulated attacks.

With the immersion of technology in the medical industry, ranging from treatments, surgeries and check-ups equipment, information security is vital for healthcare providers, more so now than ever. With that, periodical reviews of information and system security are a must for medical institutions. AKATI Consulting is a healthcare information security expert, having dealt and assisted many healthcare institutions in hardening and securing their information, which in turn helps guard the safety of their patients.
